Sterling K. Brown hosts SNL, parodies ‘This Is Us’ and ‘Black Panther’

It was Sterling K. Brown’s first time as host of Saturday Night Live and he was joined by musical guest James Bay.

The monologue went well with Brown mocking his hit show, This Is Us and taking some time to break down in tears between jokes. Then, Leslie Jones joined him both on stage and with the waterworks.

The show then went on to poke fun at This Is Us with a commercial for a show called This Is U.S. That show is a drama series on the current state of political affairs in the United States.  “A drama so unnerving, you can’t look away,” the narrator said in a dramatic voice-over scenes of Jared Kushner and Sarah Huckabee Sanders impressions. “Like This Is Us, but without the parts that feel good.”

In another hilarious skit, Sterling K. Brown portrayed a superfan of the movie Shrek who was very forceful in defending his favorite movie against the Oscar-winning animated film Coco.

Another hit of the night was when Alex Moffat and Mikey Day brought back Eric Trump and Donald Trump Jr. on Weekend Update. While that was fun to watch, the biggest Weekend Update surprise was the subtle return of Vanessa Bayer who was reprising her tongue-tied character Dawn Lazarus.

Sterling K. Brown also got to be in a Black Panther sketch where Kenan Thompson played one of T’Challa’s distant uncles who didn’t fit into the royal bloodline. That sketch carried a lot of inside jokes related to the movie.

In still another skit, Brown was a doctor who couldn’t get over how much sex his patient, Beck Bennett, has with his girlfriend.

One of the last skits of the night rested on the Nickleback song, How You Remind Me. It should be noted that Sterling K. Brown’s impersonation of Chad Kroeger was pretty spot on.
