Some conservative commentators are celebrating following the disappointing opening weekend of White House Down at the box office.
The Sony film took in roughly $25 million its first weekend in theaters, which was far below studio expectations for a potential blockbuster with a $150 million budget.
White House Down stars Jamie Foxx as President James Sawyer, an unabashedly liberal president who has plans for a major peace deal and to remove all U.S. troops from the Middle East.  Sawyer’s plan inspires American right-wing extremists to take action against the government, launching a paramilitary attack on the White House. The attack forces John Cale (played by Channing Tatum) to spring into action and save the day.
theGrio: Obama inspires Jamie Foxx presidential role in ‘White House Down’
“In Down, the ‘military-industrial complex’ and right-wing soldiers are mad because liberal President Jamie ‘Obama is Jesus’ Foxx wants to take all U.S. military forces out of the Middle East,” wrote Kurt Schlichter for Townhall.com.
“If you spend one damn cent on this crap, you’re spitting on our troops, too,” Schlichter said, suggesting a boycott of the film. “Repeat after me, conservatives: Not one damn cent.”
According to The Hollywood Reporter, David Stein at CounterContempt.com called White House Down “pure, 100 percent Obama porn.”
Another review of the summer blockbuster written by Christian Toto for Breitbart.com argues this film allows director Roland Emmerich to dump “ideological sludge atop his already bloated disaster films.”
Toto is referencing Emmerich’s earlier event films like The Day After Tomorrow, 2012 and Independence Day.Â
While Sony nor Emmerich have responded to conservative pundits, Sony has announced that all active military personnel and veterans will be admitted to see White House Down free of charge on July 4th, while tickets last, reports the Huffington Post.
