RL from Next meets the 'Why You Always Lyin' viral star

It was only a matter of time before a member from the 90's R&B group Next responded to the unexpected popularity of Why You Always Lyin; a social media parody of the group's single Too Close that blew up so fast - it was turned into a full length song that now plays on the radio.

It was only a matter of time before a member from the 90’s R&B group Next responded to the unexpected popularity of Why You Always Lyin’, a social media parody of the group’s single Too Close that blew up so fast it was turned into a full length song that now plays on the radio.

Yet when 21-year-old Nicholas Fraser, who penned the accidental hit, got the opportunity to meet Next frontman RL, things seemed a bit awkward.

Even thought RL did his best to put on a brave face and act like a good sport, during an interview with the #YouKnowIGotSoul R&B Podcast, he admitted to having mixed feelings about Fraser coopting a part of his legacy.

RL says,

Vlad asked me to make a video to make light of it and I did it reluctantly because I am going to be honest: I don’t know how I feel about it. You are making a parody of my life’s work. And on one end, I don’t want to be a stickler and, you know, seem like I am bitter or anything. But you are kind of making a parody of something that I really worked hard with. It is something that I continue to get residuals from and you know, it is part of my identity… I promise you, people will send me different languages and like, ‘Did you see this?’ And I’m like, ‘Are you kidding me?’ I try to make light of it but it is getting to the point of overkill.
