If you saw Rihanna‘s Crop Over costume this week, you know that she slayed the Grand Kadooment celebration in Barbados. But while Riri, a Bajan native, is the unofficial queen of Crop Over, she’s not the only reveler who brought the fire to the road.
At Crop Over, which celebrates the end of the Harvest season in Barbados, costume bands team up to take over the streets for the biggest party of the year.
The roots of mas (or masquerading) in costume can be traced back to the 1800s in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago. After emancipation, African slaves on the Caribbean island took over the streets and dressed up to mock the pre-Lenten masquerade balls hosted by their former owners, who were responsible for their years of enslavement.
Costumes ranged from parodies of the European masquerades to more traditional characters inspired by their own cultural traditions on the motherland.
This Grio editor was on the road at Crop Over (evidence) with Rihanna‘s band Aura and saw the most beautiful costumes on every shape, size and color of person on the road. Check out this collection of 11 other revelers who slayed Crop Over and consider adding Barbados to your list of places to vacay next year!
