Pop sensation Camila Cabello says she is “deeply ashamed” of racist language she in old Tumblr posts have resurfaced this week.
Pop sensation Camila Cabello says she is “deeply ashamed” of racist language she used as a teenager after some of those Tumblr posts were shared this week on Twitter.
As a teenager, the “Señorita” singer said she used “horrible and hurtful language” before she even realized the painful legacy and significance of what she was saying, reported CNN.
“When I was younger, I used language that I’m deeply ashamed of and will regret forever,” Cabello wrote on Twitter to her 10.3 million followers. “I was uneducated and ignorant and once I became aware of the history and the weight and the true meaning behind this horrible and hurtful language, I was deeply embarrassed I ever used it.”
“I apologized then and I apologize again now,” the 22-year-old added.

In 2012, Cabello sang with Fifth Harmony before she went solo in 2016. The racist language was included in now deleted Tumblr posts. She used the n-word, reblogged memes that re-enforced stereotypes about Black people, and made light of Rihanna’s domestic violence incident.

Today, Cabello, a Grammy nominated artist, said she wants her fans to know she has matured since her teenage years and deeply regrets the pain that her racist and reckless words caused.
“I’m an adult and I’ve grown and learned and am conscious and aware of the history and the pain it carries in a way I wasn’t before,” Cabello wrote on Twitter. “Those mistakes don’t represent the person I am or a person I’ve ever been.”
“I only stand and have ever stood for love and inclusivity, and my heart has never, even then, had any ounce of hate or divisiveness,” Cabello wrote.

Cabello ended her Twitter apology by vowing to use her social media platform to “speak out about injustice and inequality.”
“I can’t say enough how deeply sorry and ashamed I feel, and I apologize again from the bottom of my heart,” she wrote.
Some people who responded to the message indicate Cabello still has a ways to go to win back their support.
“Girl…what are they teaching the girls in US? Are you telling me at 16 this lady didn’t know what racism was???? I’m so confused,” wrote in @MasaDiamond.
“The astonishing part is it’s the “non black” forgiving her.. Like how does this even work??” wrote @patriciadingy.
And others argued that everyone messes up from time to time, and pop stars are no different.
“I’m 100% black and I fully support her. I understand that Hispanic people from Miami say “n*gga” a lot, and I also think getting worked up over tweets by a middle schooler 8 years ago is whack…” wrote Jayden @J990W.
