People with HIV are being diagnosed too late

Saturday, June 27, was National HIV Testing Day.

People with HIV are being diagnosed too late in the disease process, and not enough is being done to screen high school students, according to the latest information from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC).

A new study finds nearly 40 of HIV positive patients progress to AIDS within one year of diagnosis, 45 have AIDS within three years.

Experts say it generally takes 10 years to progress from HIV to AIDS, so this study shows many people have the disease and are waiting too long to be tested. The CDC found that a higher rate of ethnic minorities progressed to AIDS within three years.

In a separate study, researchers found that a higher percentage of African American students were compared to white or Hispanic students.
