Jayson Williams to be arraigned at NYC hospital

NEW YORK (AP) — Former NBA star Jayson Williams is set to answer drunken-driving charges from a hospital following the crash of his SUV into a tree near a New York City highway.

Williams was due to be arraigned Thursday via video link from Manhattan’s Bellevue Hospital. He’s being treated for a minor bone fracture in his neck and other injuries from Tuesday’s wreck.

Police say Williams appeared to have been drinking but refused a breath test. They say he denied he was driving even though no one else was in the SUV.

His lawyer’s name isn’t on record. Last month, lawyers asked to be removed from his defense against a reckless-manslaughter charge stemming from a 2002 shooting at his New Jersey home.

Williams is awaiting retrial. A previous jury deadlocked.

Williams retired from the New Jersey Nets in 2000.
