The room in the 3rd District police station is nondescript. Seven young men — the majority of whom are fathers — sit around a conference table, eating pizza and reflecting on their two and a half months together.

This is graduation day, and they talk about how filled with machismo they were in the beginning, but how close they are now. They talk about how they didn’t understand their rights as fathers or how to discipline their children in constructive ways, but now they are much better equipped.

They credit Sheldon Smith, 21, the founder of The Dovetail Project, conceived to teach young men — who have no blueprint at all — how to strengthen the bond between father and child
