Haiti's shaky state of mind six months after quake

When a young boy named Kiki was unexpectedly pulled free from the rubble of the Haiti earthquake, arms outstretched and smiling, he became a symbol of hope…a light at the end of the tunnel for a devastated country.

During the first few weeks after the quake, Kiki and his sister, Sabrina, were overjoyed just to be alive.

Now, just six months later, the children are wrought with grief and continue to mourn their three siblings whose bodies still lay in the rubble that was once their home.

The children are caught between life and death — the desire to forge ahead and the inability to abandon their former lives.

In a way, this tragic state of limbo mirrors Haiti,as a whole. The country remains in a state of emergency and is yet to begin the rebuilding process.

The children’s mother, Garcia, worries for their futures. Kiki wants to be a footballer and Sabrina, a nurse, but how can they move forward when tomorrow is so uncertain?

His rescue was universally inspirational…but now, six months later, Kiki’s smile has faded and the light that once shined brightly grows dim.
