A North Carolina woman believes a man tried to lure her out of her home using a recording of a crying baby. Rose Lemaine says she heard some bumping around outside her Farmville home early Wednesday morning. She got up to see what was going on, and then heard a baby crying from her back porch.

Lemaine says she almost opened her door to help the baby, but noticed her dog was barking and jerking on its leash. She then woke up her stepsons and called the sheriff’s office. That’s when Lemaine and her sons saw a tall man dressed in all-black outside their home walking away.

The Pitt County Sheriff’s Office says deputies couldn’t find anyone when they arrived, but they believe it’s possible someone was using a baby recording to try to lure Lemaine outside. She says she wants to make sure no one else falls for this scheme.

“It was very, very scary because I felt useless. I couldn’t do anything and I was crying because I was worrying about if there was a baby out there. I worried about the dogs getting to it and I wanted to go out there and try to help it, they’re like ‘no’. It was just scary.”
