The borough that’s considered to be the birthplace of hip-hop will get a visit from two of the genre’s biggest stars in one of its most important venues.
Jay-Z and Eminem are playing two nights at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx this week, reports the New York Daily News.
It will be the first concert in the new stadium and the ticket figures are eye-popping. Some of the best seats are going for $13,000.
The shows are the second part of the “Home and Home” tour that started last month in Slim Shady’s hometown of Detroit. At those shows, Jay opened and the roles will be reversed in New York, giving those lucky enough to be in attendance a chance to see a favorite son in his local element.
“I’ve always hoped that hip-hop could play any stadium,” Jay-Z said. “How perfect is it that Eminem and I get to play our hometowns?”
Elliot Wilson of hip-hop fan site Rap Radar.com called the shows “special.”
“It’s like the ultimate concert,” he said.
Guest stars galore are expected for both NYC shows. Young Jeezy joined Hova last month, and Eminem brought out Drake, 50 Cent and Dr. Dre.
“He knows the people expect something,” Wilson said of Jay-Z. “I think he has a trick up his sleeve,” he said.
Detroit Free Press music writer Brian McCollum attended the show last month and said that the two superstars were creating something unique.
“It really seemed to represent breaking a new threshold for hip-hop,” he said. “It’s something we haven’t always seen in the hip-hop world, It was almost a magic vibe.”
Wilson agreed.
“It just feels like it’s going to be a special night. They’re showing hip-hop has longevity. It’s going to be a great hip-hop moment…If it’s a phenomenal show, it could go down as one of the greatest.”
