LOS ANGELES (AP) — “Purple Rain” and “I’ll Be There” are among the latest batch of songs headed for immortality. The Recording Academy has put the songs by Prince and the Jackson 5 into the 2011 Grammy Hall of Fame class.
The designation means the Grammy people find those songs have lasting quality or historic significance. Purple Rain is the title track to the 1984 film Prince starred in, while “I’ll Be There” was the fourth straight hit for the then-brand-new group out of Gary, Indiana.
There are a number of songs making the grade, including “Penny Lane” by the Beatles, Al Green’s “Take Me To the River,” ‘’Please Mr. Postman” by the Marvelettes, “The Letter” by the Box Tops and “Cat’s In The Cradle” by Harry Chapin.
