TheGrio’s 100: Hallerin Hilton Hill, radio host working to ‘Wow’ Knoxville

In 1990, Hallerin Hilton Hill had a wife, a one-year-old son, and no idea where their next meal was coming from. Hill, now known across Tennessee as “Triple H,” turned a 90-day temp job at Knoxville’s WIVK Radio into a 20-year broadcast career; he has a top-rated morning radio show in his state, and a Sunday TV talk show called Anything Is Possible.

Hallerin Hilton Hill is making history … by proving that, in fact, anything is possible. In his radio and TV shows, Hill serves as an impassioned interviewer to those whom he refers to as “Wow People” — individuals who astound others with their capacity to overcome the “impossible.” In a 2008 motivational speech, Hill described the Wow factor in acronym form: people who have faith they’re going to Win, who turn Obstacles into Opportunities, and who are willing to do the Work.

A “Wow Person” himself, Hill walked into Knoxville’s WIVK Radio (which, mind you, wasn’t hiring) as an unemployed 20-something, and walked out with a “temp” job that hasn’t yet expired. Says the talk-show Tennessean, “The last thing that our world, our planet needs is people who are waking up, looking into the mirror and saying, ‘Today, I’m just feeling like sucking’… Our nation, our world has been made better by people who determined to make ‘em say wow… people who had an incredible vision.” It’s Hill’s vision that accompanies many Knoxville residents in their morning commute, starting their days with a few inspirational moments courtesy of “Triple H.”

What’s next for Hallerin?

On both the Anything is Possible program, and The Hallerin Hilton Hill Morning Show, Hill will continue to showcase the stories of incredible people.

In his own words …

Hill begins each broadcast with the following affirmation: “Welcome to this brand new day. This day has never been lived before. It’s a blank canvas. If you will it so, it can be your masterpiece. As you wake up this morning think of three things you’re grateful for and then get out there and live this day with all the joy, wonder and enthusiasm you can muster.”

A little-known fact …

Also a songwriter, Hill’s “Who Would Imagine a King” was performed by Whitney Houston in The Preacher’s Wife. The 1996 film’s Grammy-nominated soundtrack remains the biggest selling gospel record in Billboard chart history.
