After earning a college degree and moving to California to pursue a career in acting, Hubbard was without work. After years of paying her dues, the actress is on her way up. Madame Noire spoke with this soon to be star about her ideal role, The Ideal Husband, and her efforts to build the ideal community.

Tell us about your first acting job

At nine I was doing theater in Chicago. I did my first role on stage for a hair care product. And I had one line and I was extremely nervous. I didn’t know what they were telling me to do or what I should say. It was all these adults surrounding me, like coaching me like ‘you can do. We’re going push you out on stage, you do one line then we’re going to wave you to come back. Go out there smile, say your line, and then smile again. Always look off in the wings to see when we want you to come back. So that’s what I had to do. I went out there and said my line and everybody started clapping and shouting. I looked off to the side and they said ok come on back. I didn’t know I was like a puppet.

So fast forward to your college years, what made you decide to study broadcast journalism?

I had been working in the industry professionally since I was a kid, already doing acting. So I didn’t want to go to Columbia College and major in theater. So I chose a fallback. I liked researching and writing papers. So I minored in theater and majored in Broadcast Journalism. But I guess I stuck with the theater/acting side of everything because all throughout college I was doing acting.
