Special delivery! Baby born in U-haul on interstate

From: NBC Chicago

A couple making their way toward Chicago will never forget Milepost 125 along Interstate 94 in western Wisconsin. That’s where their newborn arrived early Tuesday.

While traveling with his pregnant wife and 3-year-old, Draper Lewis made an emotional 911 call shortly after midnight to report that his wife was going into labor. By the time a Wisconsin State Trooper arrived at Draper’s U-Haul, baby Amaya had already been born.

A dispatcher had helped guide him through cleaning the baby and tying the umbilical cord with a shoestring.

“I wrapped the baby in a jacket and handed her to my wife,” Lewis later recalled. “I turned the heat up in the truck and waited for the state patrol. I was hysterical and the patrol officers were asking me to calm down.”

The mother and newborn were taken by ambulance to a Black River Falls hospital and later transferred to a hospital in La Crosse.

When Mr. Lewis was later asked how he was doing, he said he was still in shock and couldn’t believe he has a “U-haul Baby.”

Both mother and baby Amaya are said to be doing well.
