The family of a Miramar mother who was shot and killed reportedly by her toddler son were granted custody of the boy Friday morning.
A Broward judge gave custody of the 2-year-old boy to mom Julia Bennett’s family while granting supervised visits to the biological father during the Friday morning hearing.
The boy’s father did not attend the hearing. Bennett’s family said they haven’t met the father.
The tot had been placed in the custody of the Department of Children and Families Thursday, a day after Bennett was found shot to death inside her apartment, possibly at the hands of the young boy.

Authorities say an unidentified man, believed to be the boy’s father, was inside the apartment at the time of the shooting and reportedly left a loaded gun out within reach of the toddler.
Police said the man called 911 and told them the tot pulled the trigger accidentally. The man was questioned by detectives but there have been no arrests, and police are still investigating the shooting.
Police confirmed they conducted gun shot residue tests on the man and toddler but haven’t released those results.
