Kwame Kilpatrick cleared of sexual misconduct

Former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick has been cleared of sexual misconduct in prison for a one-second-long incident in which he touched his wife’s breast while she visited him last summer.

Michigan Department of Corrections spokesman Russ Marlan said today that Kilpatrick had been cleared on April 12 after a hearings officer reviewed the case file.

Evidence included a video of the July 4 incident showing that Kilpatrick briefly touched the breast of his wife, Carlita, while the couple were apparently joking. Their children were also present, Marlan said.

The hearings officer also learned that a captain at the Oaks Correctional Facility in Manistee, where Kilpatrick was incarcerated, told his staff not to file a misconduct report, Marlan said. The captain, who was not named, spoke to Kilpatrick about his conduct and considered the matter closed.
