Memphis woman confronts cemetery over location of daughter

Voner Matlock, 27, had recently given birth to her first child when she suddenly died of an enlarged heart. At her burial service Saturday at Galilee Memorial Gardens in Bartlett, TN all appeared to be well. That is until her mother, Vickie Jackson, wanted to go back to her daughter’s burial site days later.

“I’m looking for my loved ones that I buried Saturday,” said Jackson. “Here it is on Thursday, and y’all are telling me you can’t find her.”

The men at the cemetery could not identify the grave site since they were out of town until 6 pm on Thursday. They marked the grave early the next morning, but that was too late in Jackson’s opinion. Jemar Lambert, vice president of the cemetery, did not bring a temporary grave marker with the body.

“He though we automatically flagged the graves for the family”, said Lambert. “I told him, ‘no, we flag the grave upon request from the family.’”

Now Jackson would like the cemetery to exhume her daughter’s casket and move her to a different location. “I want to see my baby’s casket and I want to see my baby’s body in that casket”. she said.

Lambert has agreed to her request, but maintains that Jackson should have picked out her daughter’s plot instead of relying on the funeral home.

“Here’s the thing, I’m not at fault, said Lambert. “You’re at fault for not taking care of your business the correct way”
