Costa Rica
Of all the places I’ve visited for BlackAtlas.com and I don’t think any place I’ve been is more beautiful than Costa Rica. Blessed with abundant rain forests, beaches on both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans and a serious commitment to protecting the environment, this Central American country is a wonderful travel destination.
There are many rain forests in Costa Rica, places where you can see birds, fish and animals that can’t be found in the United States, as well as birds that migrate down to Central America for the winter. These are great places to take children, where they can live out a National Geographic fantasy. I visited La Silva Station, which is as much a research facility as a tourist destination. Close to the Atlantic coast is the Braulio Carrillo National Park, one of the most important rain forest reserves in the country.
Costa Rica’s Pacific coast is full of resorts and great beaches. It is much more developed and tourist friendly than the Atlantic coast. Jaco is a town of upscale condos and big hotels. Further down south on the Pacific coast is Playa Hermosa, a black sand beach that is one of CR’s many surf crazed locations. There are many cool beachfront rentals where surfers rise at the crack of dawn to look out and check on the waves.
As much as surfers love Costa Rica, yogi’s view it as a little bit of heaven. I don’t know anyone with a serious yoga practice who hasn’t been to a retreat down in Costa Rica. There are a medley of great locations, many on the Pacific coast and a few not far from the country’s biggest city San Jose.
