The Memphis City School Board has voted to reverse a potential delay in the start of the school year, allowing students to return to school on their previously scheduled date of Monday, August 8th.
The conflict revolves around money.
“I think people perceive it is now in the city council’s hands, and in the administration’s hands,” said Memphis City School Board chairman Martavius Jones to WMC-TV ActionNews 5. “We’ve done our part to say school will open as scheduled. I’m trusting the city council and administration will hold their end of the bargain.”

In order for school to start on time, $55 million is needed to fund the upcoming school year by Friday, August 5th. The school board believes it can achieve this and with a promise by the city of $12 million towards the effort, it will achieve it’s final goal of $68 Million within the coming months.
While the city’s offer is less than the board hoped for, officials are confident school will start on time and no programs will be cut.
