'I'm a slave master!': Reporter's live gaffe leads to awkwardness

It’s never a good idea to say, “I’m a slavemaster!” But you know when it’s really not a good idea? When you’re doing a live TV segment with the “Firefighter Fitness Team,” and the Firefighter Fitness Team is a group of black guys.

During a live report from NBC Chicago, Kim Vatis, a 2009 AP “Best Reporter” winner for excellence in journalism, used the unfortunate phrase while doing a rope exercise with Chicago fire department fitness coordinator Darryl Johnson.

Vatis would later apologize on Twitter, saying: “Feeling terrible that I offended people today.. Total misuse of the word. My apologies!”
