Bears cut receiver Sam Hurd amid drug charges

Chicago Bears General Manager Jerry Angelo confirmed Friday afternoon that the team will cut wideout Sam Hurd, charged this week in a federal drug ring.

Angelo said during a brief news conference the charges caught the team off guard but not enough to prevent management from doing “the right thing,” which is cutting Hurd from the roster.

Hurd, who was traded from Dallas to the Bears in July, was taken into custody Wednesday night outside Morton’s Steakhouse in Rosemont after he accepted a kilo of cocaine from an undercover federal agent he thought was a supplier.

The GM told press Friday there were no red flags in researching Hurd and nothing ever presented to the Bears by the NFL to contradict that.
