The White House on Tuesday announced the appointment of Cecilia Muñoz as the Obama administration’s new Domestic Policy Council director, replacing Melody Barnes, who exited the post last month.
The appointment is being hailed by Latino leaders, and Muñoz will be the second woman of color to hold the post (Barnes is African-American.)
President Obama named Muñoz during a pivotal re-election year. At the White House today, reporters asked Press Secretary Jay Carney whether Muñoz could help the administration’s outreach to Latinos. White House Press Secretary Jay Carney responded that “Cecilia is the best person for the job.”
Muñoz is a Bolivian-American who was born and raised in Michigan. Though she has long been known as a civil rights and immigration advocate – she was the Senior Vice President at the National Council of La Raza – her current position in the Administration has not been entirely without controversy.
