Shellie Zimmerman, the wife of the neighborhood watch volunteer who shot and killed teenager Trayvon Martin in February, was arrested today on perjury charges, for allegedly lying to the court during a bond hearing for George Zimmerman in April.
According to information in a press release from the office of state attorney Angela Corey, the special prosecutor in the Martin case, at approximately 3:30 p.m., sheriffs deputies arrested Shellie Zimmerman at her home in Seminole County, Florida, and transported her to the John E. Polk Correctional Facility, where her husband is also incarcerated, awaiting trial — or a new bond hearing — on second degree murder charges in the Martin killing.
Shellie Zimmerman was booked on one count of perjury and released soon afterward on $1,000 bond, officials said.
TheGrio reported on June 6th in an article by Joy-Ann Reid, ‘Could Shellie Zimmerman face perjury charges?’ that there was speculation that Shellie Zimmerman may have to answer to the court on charges of perjury. The charges stem from phone calls recorded between her and her husband, George Zimmerman while he was in jail. The two discussed their finances and money raised from a website that accepted donations for Zimmerman’s defense fund and living expenses. Shellie Zimmerman told the court in telephone testimony that she didn’t know how much money was in her husband’s PayPal account and Zimmerman’s attorney Mark O’Mara acknowledged that George Zimmerman “allowed his finances to be misstated in court” by his wife.
