Spike Lee wrote a short article in Bloomberg Business Week about the difficulties he faced in trying to get his new film Red Hook Summer financed by Hollywood. “I don’t think Hollywood understands diversity.” he writes. The piece is not just about being being black in the industry, but about getting a film funded that does not include a superhero.

We decided to do a movie about a young suburban black kid from Atlanta who’s sent to the Red Hook projects in Brooklyn to spend a summer with a grandfather he’s never met.
