Zimmerman's attorney Mark O'Mara to speak at gun rights policy conference

Mark O’Mara, George Zimmerman’s attorney in the Trayvon Martin case, has agreed to speak at this year’s Gun Rights Policy Conference in Orlando Florida. The conference will be held in September and is organized by the Second Amendment Foundation. The Second Amendment Foundation describes itself as an organization that is dedicated to promoting a better understanding about Constitutional heritage to privately own and possess firearms.

This year’s conference will examine, city gun bans, “smart” guns, concealed carry, federal legislation, and gun show regulation. Some gun rights advocates have rallied around George Zimmerman and “Stand Your Ground” laws since the shooting of Trayvon Martin earlier this year.

O’Mara is expected to use “Stand Your Ground”  in Zimmerman’s defense. Zimmerman has been charged with second degree murder after killing Trayvon Martin in what he claims was an act of self-defense.

Zimmerman told police that he shot Trayvon after he pursued the teenager because he appeared suspicious. When the two men began to fight Zimmerman contends he feared for his life and discharged his firearm in compliance with the law’s requirements.

“Stand Your Ground” allows the use of deadly force for those who feel “a reasonable fear of imminent peril of death or great bodily harm.”
