BALTIMORE – Maryland Delegate Emmett Burns is taking exception to a new campaign supporting same-sex marriage, and he’s asking the owner of the Baltimore Ravens to get involved.
In a letter sent to the media, Burns refers to an email that advertised the raffle of two tickets to the Ravens season opener as part of a Marylanders for Marriage Equality fundraiser. The tickets were courtesy of linebacker Brendon Ayanbadejo, who supports same-sex marriage.
In the letter that’s addressed to Ravens owner Steve Bisciotti, Burns asked him to step in, saying, “Many of my constituents and your football supporters are appalled and aghast that a member of the Ravens football team would step into this controversial divide and try to sway public opinion one way or the other.”
Ayanbadejo responded via Twitter on Tuesday night, saying, “The fight is not about same-sex marriage or interracial marriage or slavery or equal rights for women. The fight is for equality for all.”
Last year, the Ravens star appeared in a web campaign sponsored by Marylanders for Marriage Equality.
“I believe we should be doing everything we can to make Maryland families stronger, which is why I support marriage for gay and lesbian couples who want to make a lifetime commitment to each other,” Ayanbadejo said in the campaign.
