13-year-old charged with murder of her 2-year-old sister

METRO ATLANTA — In an unthinkable homicide case, a 13-year-old girl has been charged with the brutal murder her two-year-old half-sister.

According to NBC affiliate 11Alive News, DeKalb County police in metropolitan Atlanta charged the teenager as an adult on Tuesday. Investigators said the toddler, Sasha Lamaya Ray, died following multiple stab wounds.

Police said the 13-year-old, identified as Tyasia Jackson, was babysitting little Sasha and three other siblings while their parents were at work on Monday. At some point she called her parents to say she couldn’t find her sister.

When the teen’s parents returned, they frantically searched their Decatur family home, only to find Sasha’s lifeless body in the backyard. Investigators said the parents tried taking the child to hospital and emergency responders met them along the way.

“At this point, our detectives believe the cause of death was multiple stab wounds to the chest of the 2-year-old. They believe the 13-year-old attacked the child inside the home and then carried the body outside where it was discovered by her father,” said Mekka Parrish of Dekalb County police.

“She’s gone on to glory now. Now it’s up to me to make it to where she is,” the child’s father, Shelton Ray told Atlanta’s Channel 2 news. “Like I tell all my children, they have to get themselves into heaven. I have to get myself into heaven.”

The 13-year-old is expected to make her first court appearance Tuesday afternoon. Police said they believe the two girls are half-sisters, having the same mother but different fathers.
