Golden Globe nominations announced: ‘Django’ scores big, ‘Beasts’ star snubbed

This morning, the Hollywood Foreign Press announced its Golden Globes nominations for the best films and television of the past year.

This year’s crop of potential award winners included the usual surprises, snubs and speculation about who might emerge from this year’s Globes as a frontrunner for the Academy Award.

Quentin Tarantino’s critically acclaimed slavery-revenge epic Django Unchained was one of the biggest winners today, scoring nods for best picture, two for supporting actor (Leonardo DiCaprio and Christoph Waltz) and for best director.

Denzel Washington also was recognized for some of his career best work as an alcoholic pilot in the hit film Flight.

However, Quevenzhane Wallis, the breakout pint-size star of the celebrated indie film Beasts of the Southern Wild, was snubbed in the best actress category.

The lone African-American nominated in the television categories was Don Cheadle, who will compete for best actor in a comedy or musical series for House of Lies.

Steven Spielberg’s historical biopic Lincoln led all films with seven nominations.

NBC will televise the awards show on January 13, with comedians Amy Poehler and Tina Fey co-hosting.
