Sacha Baron Cohen dropped 'Django Unchained' role for 'Les Miserables'

Comedic actor Sacha Boren Cohen (Borat) is just one of several stars who at one point considered joining the cast of Django Unchained, according to the Huffington Post.

Kevin Coster, Kurt Russell, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Anthony LaPaglia are others on the list who were attached to the film at some point, but left production for various reasons.

Cohen decided to accept the part of Thenardier in Les Miserables because it was a more substantial role than the one he would have played in Django Unchained.

“I was editing The Dictator and we were very close to release and Paramount wouldn’t push the date,” Cohen told Deadline.com. “And then I knew I’d have to jump straight from there into Les Mis and it basically became a choice of either pulling out of Les Mis or pulling out of Django. I’m sure Django is an incredible movie, but it was essentially one scene.”

In Django,  Cohen was supposed to play the role of a character named Scotty Harmony, a 24-year-old virgin whose father purchased Django’s wife Broomhilda (Kerry Washington) in a card game with Calvin Candie (played by Leonardo DiCaprio).

This scene didn’t make it into the final cut of the movie.
