‘Django Unchained’ has decent night at Golden Globes; officially Tarantino’s biggest hit

Quentin Tarantino’s slavery-themed hit Django Unchained made a decent showing at last night’s 70th annual Golden Globe awards.

The film took home trophies for best screenplay (for Tarantino) and best supporting actor (for Christoph Waltz’s performance as Dr. King Schultz).

Waltz’s victory came among a competitive field of nominees, which included heavy hitters like Tommy Lee Jones (Lincoln), Philip Seymour Hoffman (The Master) and his Django co-star Leonardo DiCaprio.

“Quentin, you know that my indebtedness to you and gratitude knows no words,” Waltz told his director from the stage while accepting his honor.

Tarantino helped turned Waltz into a bonafide star back in 2009 when he cast him in the lead villain role in Inglourious Basterds. Waltz’s performance as Col. Hans Landa in that film won him the best supporting actor Academy Award. We’ll know in just a few weeks if Waltz can repeat that victory at the Oscars.

Even if Django goes empty handed on Oscar night, it continues to make boatloads of money at the box office.

This past weekend the film grossed an estimated $11.1 million, putting its total at $125 million — making it Tarantino’s most successful film to date.
