Actor and activist Danny Glover is under fire from gun rights advocates after making some controversial remarks during a recent appearance at Texas A&M University.
The left-wing Lethal Weapon star argued that the Second Amendment was conceived largely to preserve the institution of slavery and to suppress Native Americans.
“I don’t know if you know the genesis of the right to bear arms,” Glover said. “The Second Amendment comes from the right to protect themselves from slave revolts, and from uprisings by Native Americans. So, a revolt from people who were stolen from their land, or revolt from people whose land was stolen from, that’s what the genesis of the Second Amendment is.”
Campus officials have already begun to distance themselves from Glover’s comments.
“I had no idea, we really didn’t know that topic was coming up,” said Luke Altendorf, the director of Texas A&M’s Memorial Student Center in an interview with Campus Reform. “Someone was asking a question about activism, I think that’s where some of that came from.”
Texas Aggie Conservatives, a homegrown conservative student group, has created a petition in protesting what they call the “left wing bias” of speakers invited to appear at Texas A&M.
Glover has been an outspoken proponent of progressive politics and policies for decades.
