During Media Day for Super Bowl XLVII in New Orleans, Baltimore Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis responded to an Access Hollywood question about “catfishing”, saying he believes he “may have been catfished once or twice.”
The term catfish refers to someone who pretends to be someone else on various social media sites, often in an effort to create an online relationship.
Catfishing has become a mainstream term in light of a recent online dating scam involving Notre Dame football player Manti Te’o.
Te’o was under the impression he was dating a girl online, but it was all a hoax.
Orchestrated by Ronaiah Tuiasosopo, the hoax fooled Te’o into believing he was dating a girl.
During Media Day, Lewis told reporters:
“I may have been catfished once or twice. I have to go way back into my days and think about it…I know the issue, what happened, wasn’t funny, but when I saw the catfish thing and when he told his story I just thought it was hilarious that people would do that to people, and then I did have to reflect because I think I’ve been done once or twice.”
