Fall 2013 Fashion Week recap: Established and up-and-coming black designers shine during fashion's main event

Fall 2013 Fashion Week just ended, and as usual it was an exciting preview of the best in American design. Black designers made a big impact, with three designers of African descent showing in the official tents of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, a 33 percent increase over the previous season.

In addition, small shows off-site from the main stages gave new visionaries in fashion a chance to shine. Particularly, Laura Smalls, who recently designed a custom frock worn by first lady Michelle Obama, made a big splash with her sexy, classically-tailored “Symmetry” collection.
