Fall 2013 Fashion Week just ended, and as usual it was an exciting preview of the best in American design. Black designers made a big impact, with three designers of African descent showing in the official tents of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, a 33 percent increase over the previous season.
In addition, small shows off-site from the main stages gave new visionaries in fashion a chance to shine. Particularly, Laura Smalls, who recently designed a custom frock worn by first lady Michelle Obama, made a big splash with her sexy, classically-tailored “Symmetry” collection.
