Two Republican lawmakers are questioning who approved Jay-Z and Beyoncé’s recent trip to Cuba, reportedly to celebrate their fifth wedding anniversary.
Florida representatives Ileana Ros-Lehtinen and Mario Diaz-Balart asked in a letter to the U.S. Treasury Department what type of license the power couple obtained for their trip to Cuba, reports Reuters.
The celebrity couple were seen dining, dancing, and sightseeing in Havana last Thursday with their mothers.
Both Republican members of Congress represent high populations of Cuban-Americans in south Florida and asked for “information regarding the type of license that Beyoncé and Jay-Z received, for what purpose, and who approved such travel.”
“Despite the clear prohibition against tourism in Cuba, numerous press reports described the couple’s trip as tourism, and the Castro regime touted it as such in its propaganda,” Ros-Lehtinen and Diaz-Balart wrote in the letter.
“We represent a community of many who have been deeply and personally harmed by the Castro regime’s atrocities, including former political prisoners and the families of murdered innocents,” they added.
The State Department reported they had no prior knowledge of the visit, according to Reuters.
If Jay-Z, Beyoncé, and their guests did not obtain licenses to travel to Cuba, they could be subjected to a fine.
