The 2013 MTV Movie Awards unleashed another round of no-holes-barred sketch comedy, honoring films Django Unchained, The Avengers, Silver Linings Playbook and others with gilded popcorn awards at the annual ceremony.
Actress and comedian Rebel Wilson hosted this year’s event on Sunday, opening the show with a unique edition of Eminem’s “Lose Yourself” and later joking she’d lost out on the lead role in Django Unchained to Jamie Foxx.
“I could play black,” the host remarked. “I’m really into fat white chicks. I’m inside one right now.”
Acceptance speeches steal the show
The top prize for “Movie of the Year” was presented by Brad Pitt to The Avengers, and was accepted by director Joss Whedon.
“We’re Biebered to be standing here,” Whedon said in his speech. “I am so grateful and very excited for 2015; we’re going to bring you ‘Avengers 2.‘”
Foxx received the “Generation” Award at the event, which was presented to him by Django co-star Kerry Washington, who Wilson described as an “actress able to play a strong black women other than Tyler Perry.”
Washington and Foxx danced across the stage together before Foxx accepted the prize, wearing a T-shirt emblazoned with a picture of Trayvon Martin, and the words “Know Justice, Know Peace.” Foxx has been a supporter of the slain teen”s family.
“It takes a team and a family to hold you down,” Foxx said in his speech, thanking his family and entertainment colleagues. “I feel like I’m just getting started.”
Mentioning he would be directing his first television show for the Syfy network, the actor added, “Anytime somebody tells you that you can’t do something, make sure you do it.”
‘Encouraging me to be crazy’
Earlier, Foxx picked up his first award of the night when Adam Sandler and Chris Rock presented him and Samuel L. Jackson with the prize for “Best WTF Moment” for a scene together in Django.
“Thank you for encouraging me to be crazy,” Jackson said to Foxx, also addressing the film’s producers and fans in his classic style. “Thank you mother***ers.”
Jackson made a second appearance with his Avengers cast-mates, who received the award for Best Fight.
Snoop Lion showed up on stage smoking a blunt, as per usual, and introduced musical act Macklemore and Ryan Lewis with pop singer Ke$ha. The duo performed their record “Can’t Hold Us.” Kim Kardashian introduced a musical performance by Selena Gomez of her new song, “Come and Get It.”
Beasts of the Southern Wild star Quvenzhané Wallis sat in the audience with her now-famed stuffed-animal purse, which became a part of Wilson’s spoofs. The host pretended to film contents of the handbag, then cut to a shot of empty liquor bottles.
“Do you know what they call drinking at age 9 in Australia?” Wilson asked the 9-year-old, who shook her head in disgust. “A late start.”
Decked in all purple, Wallis later presented the award for “Best Villain.”
Will Ferrell received the “Comedic Genius” award, and wore a three-piece suit covered in dollar bills on stage to accept his popcorn memorabilia. He brought along an Asian woman and her three children, who he claimed to be his wife and kids.
The awards ceremony was held at Sony Pictures lot in Los Angeles, and additionally honored Wilson, Bradley Cooper, Emma Watson, Taylor Lautner and Tom Hiddleston with prizes.
Along with entertainment, the show highlighted upcoming summer blockbusters, offering a sneak preview from the upcoming film Iron Man 3, and the world premiere trailer of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire.
Additional presenters included Chris Pine, Zoe Saldana and Zachary Quinto from the forthcoming Star Trek sequel, and Vin Diesel and Michelle Rodriguez from Fast & Furious 6.
Red carpet soundbites
Prior to the ceremony, the red carpet was in full force leading into the showroom. Drag queen RuPaul came dressed in purple paisley, and expressed support for Beasts of the Southern Wild, his favorite film of the year.
“I love a spiritual moment,” the entertainer said on the red carpet. “I love anything that looks behind the curtain of what we’re doing on this planet…It’s all about the tenacity of the human spirit.”
RuPaul also chimed in on the ongoing fight for marriage equality, commenting, “It’s not even debatable. Give everybody a chance to live their life. People love fear. Humans love fear. I can never gauge how much fear they’re going to want. I’ve lived a long time to see the pendulum swings back and forth.”
Charlamagne tha God, star of MTV2’s Guy Code, discussed the significance of his southern roots in his job.
“You have to have that country sensibility to stay grounded in this business because you could come out here and lose your head,” he remarked. “It keeps me in the humble space where I need to be.”
The TV and radio personality was on hand to promote his TV series, but further spoke to the recent uproar over Rick Ross’ date rape lyrics and Reebok’s decision to discontinue their endorsement of the MMG rapper.
“These rappers have never been conscious of what they say,” Charlamagne remarked. “The problem I have with that is where is the line in hip hop? Why did we all the sudden start pointing at Rick Ross and say that was wrong. These guys rap about killing each other, they celebrate drug culture, now all the sudden [sic], something’s wrong? No, it’s been wrong. So why did we just all the sudden[ly] target him. If we’re going to talk to him, let’s talk to all of them.”
