Bravo 'Newlyweds' Alaska and Kimberly: 'Divorce is not an option'

Bravo’s latest docu-series Newlyweds: The First Year debuts tonight and promises to go “where no network has gone before.” The series will go deep inside the lives of four newlywed couples to document their most personal moments over the course of a full year.

New York City couple, Alaska and Kimberly Gideon, allowed Bravo’s cameras to document the first year of their marriage.

Nearly two years ago, Kimberly, a celebrity stylist, wed the love of her life, Alaska, a music executive. The pair are constantly on the run between Los Angeles and New York City and struggle to find ways to balance both their careers and a marriage. Kim wants to start a life together in Harlem while Alaska’s work keeps him in LA, making married life very different from what she imagined.

“The hardest part about having the cameras follow you around your first year, is the cameras following you around your first year.” Alaska admitted.

“It was really intimate. They got into the bed with us, practically,” Kimberly said. “They were like ‘yeah get in the bed, and let us film you guys.’ They tried to get into the shower with us… they just wanted to be there.”

According to Bravo, fifty percent of marriages now end in divorce, and Newlyweds captures couples as they put their love to the test.

“We do argue, on and off the show, but I think what’s so dope is that we are able to show the world that side of our marriage,” Alaska said. “We fight through it, we get through any challenge or any obstacle, that’s the big thing that we’re about.”

After filming season 5 of the Real Housewives of Atlanta, former Pittsburgh Steeler Kordell Stewart filed for divorce from his reality television star wife, Porsha. The couple had been married for nearly 2 years, and many people pointed to reality TV stardom as one reason their marriage failed.

Alaska and Kimberly said they are not worried about Newylweds exposure doing damage to their union.

“First off divorce is not an option,” Alaska said. “I think that people ruin their marriages. So for us it’s just foundation. We’ve been together for five years and we’ve been through hell and high water and a TV show is not going to be able to split what we have now.
