Venus Williams previews her dress for the French Open, discusses inspiration for her EleVen clothing collection

The top tennis stars in the world are currently gearing up for their appearances in the sport’s coming Grand Slam tournaments. Venus Williams, one of the most decorated competitors in the field, is currently preparing for the French Open, which begins on Sunday, and training heavily, as would be expected.

“Summertime is Grand Slam season so it’s mostly business! Training, training and more training!” Williams told theGrio over email. “From the French Open I go into Wimbledon, then right to the US Open, which runs through Labor Day so that’s pretty much it.”

But there is something else of critical importance on the mind of one of the world’s leading athletes: What to wear on Sunday.

Of course, Williams has already decided, having designed a dress as part of her EleVen sportswear collection that will be perfect for the occasion: the Geo 2.0.

Venus has shared images of the dress, which will debut during the French Open, with theGrio exclusively. As one of the most-watched women in the world, Williams understands the power of style, and infuses her personal spirit into every piece in her collection.

But it all starts with the tennis dress.

“As I start the design process for each season, I create a tennis dress that is the centerpiece of the collection,” Williams explained. She uses the design of the main concept dress to create dynamic permutations of it, creating perfect looks for her major competitions.

“Each dress is reflective of a different side of me,” Williams stated. “The Geo 2.0  for the French Open is feminine and fun; the Perfect Mesh for Wimbledon is more along the lines of your traditional tennis whites, but the open back and mesh detail give it a bit of a Venus style twist; and my US Open dress will be flirty, colorful and again, very feminine. I like to take fashion risks on and off the court.”

Venus focuses on “performance and style, which are the key elements of EleVen,” both when creating her wardrobe for important matches, and designing the lovely clothing line, according its creator.

We look forward to watching Williams play during the French Open, as a wonderful start to a summer of fun. Will Williams be taking some time out to enjoy the coming warm months? Only to design even more fresh fashions.

She will not have “much down time,” Venus wrote.

“My down time, so to speak, is spending time working on the Spring 2014 collection for EleVen.”
