If you’re a budding entrepreneur, struggling artist, or just someone with a dream and not a dollar, Kickstarter has become the go-to website to make your wishes come true.
Actress and singer Antonique Smith, who is best known for playing R&B diva Faith Evans in Notorious, used the crowd-funding website to get her real-life singing career off the ground with great success. After releasing her promo video displaying her talents as a songbird, her fanbase raised over $50,000 to make her debut album a reality.
Kickstarter use as a platform for good music was again on display at the top of 2013, when Grio’s 100 alumnus and promising Brooklyn emcee Nitty Scott MC needed the money to make a proper music video for her hit single “Flower Child.”
Not only did she meet her financial goal, the video premiered on MTV2, solidifying Kickstarter’s financial potential for emerging artists.
One third of rap royalty Run DMC, Darryl McDaniels, wants to use Kickstarter fuel another passion that’s close to his heart: comic books.
The “Raising Hell” rapper wants to launch the world’s first independent hip-hop comic. To make his graphic novel dreams come true, DMC recruited the brightest minds in the comic industry to execute this vision.
The premise of the storyline is intriguing.
From DMC’s Kickstarter: Set in hip-hop’s revolutionary era of the 80’s, the first comic features DMC as a superhero fighting for justice in an alternate universe. Wild Style-inspired graffiti covers every surface of this world as the true grit of pre-Giuliani New York is captured within the pages of the graphic novel.
Staying true to the independent spirit of hip-hop, DMC is self-funding this new chapter and invites everyone to share in the experience by contributing to get the comic book made via a Kickstarter campaign. The entire project is going to be funded by contributions, making this a true labor of love to be shared and produced with his fans. Editor in Chief, Edgardo Miranda-Rodriguez states it best, “It gives us an opportunity to be the first hip-hop comic book publisher and be completely funded by the fans whose reward is this actual historic book.”
