Juror B29 regrets not pushing for hung jury in Zimmerman trial

ABC’s Good Morning America aired more of their interview with Juror B29 of the George Zimmerman trial Friday morning.  The network identified the 38-year-old mother of eight only as “Maddy.”

She is of Puerto Rican descent and was the only minority juror alongside five other white women.

“My first vote was second-degree murder,” Maddy told Roberts. Maddy’s attorney, David Chico, sat next to her during the interview but did not speak during the segment.

Maddy said that she doesn’t know if she was bullied by other jurors in deliberation.

“Some people have said George Zimmerman got away with murder,” Roberts asked Matty. “How do you respond to those people who say that?”

After taking a short pause, Maddy responded:

“George Zimmerman got away with murder, but you can’t get away from God and, at the end of the day, he’s going to have a lot of questions and answers he has to deal with.”

She expressed that she thinks Zimmerman was guilty, but in light of the way that the law was read to her the jurors could not prove Zimmerman’s killing Trayvon Martin was intentional. Maddy stands by the jury decision, but admitted to the struggle that she faced between following her heart and following the law.

Robin asked B29 about having the power to make the jury a hung jury, and Maddy regrets not making that decision.

“I was the juror that was going to give them a hung jury,” said Maddy. “I was going to fight until the end.”

Maddy apologized to Sybrina Fulton, the mother of Trayvon Martin, and empathized with her pain as a mother.

“I was forcibly included in Trayvon Martin’s death. I carry him on my back… I’m hurting as much as Trayvon Martin’s mother,” Maddy said.  “If she thinks that no one cared about her son… I do care, I couldn’t do anything about it.”

She wishes peace to the Martin family and said that she feels like she let them down. Maddy continually made references to both her own spirituality and the rules of law:

“The law couldn’t prove it. We just have to believe in the Lord that if he has to pay, he will pay.”

According to Robin Roberts, B29 agreed with B37 that race was not discussed in the deliberations. She also indicated to Roberts she did not plan on doing interviews, but changed her mind once B37 taped an interview with CNN’s Anderson Cooper.

The exclusive interview was taped Thursday and segments of it aired on ABC’s World News and Nightline later that evening. The full interview was broadcast Friday.
