Joan, a woman from the Upper West Side of New York City, called into NY1‘s The Call and expressed her views on the city’s stop-and-frisk-policy, saying she felt it should be eliminated everywhere but Manhattan.
The female caller talked to host John Schiumo about her experience meeting NYC mayoral candidate Bill de Blasio, and how she may vote for someone else because he wants to end stop-and-frisk in all boroughs.
Joan start with saying she is “totally against” the controversial policy and how she is “active” in “liberal politics.”
Within the same breath the caller said that she questioned de Blasio, “You’re not going to end stop-and-frisk in Manhattan, right? Just in Staten Island, Brooklyn, and Queens. And I’m still up in the air about The Bronx.”
“You can’t expect us to live by the same rules we dictate to other people for heaven’s sake!” she continued. “Just because people like me are against stop-and-frisk in places like Brooklyn and Queens and Staten Island doesn’t mean we don’t want it to continue in Manhattan.”
Schiumo laughed, thinking the caller was being sarcastic. The Upper West Side woman assured him that she was being sincere and added:
Well, in all due respect, think about it this way: Affordable housing, I mean, New Yorkers accept that kind of thing in the boroughs, but you don’t want those people living around you.
Following her endorsement of mayoral candidate Christine Quinn, Schiumo quickly wrapped up the interview.
