Scandal is back — and fans everywhere rejoiced as Kerry Washington strutted her way across TV screens in millions of homes last week, marking the season 3 premiere of the show.

In one highly-anticipated hour, Washington’s Olivia Pope and her crew returned from season 2’s cliffhanger and delivered answers and considerable drama for dedicated viewers.

The new episode was jam packed with shocking, tweet-worthy moments — from the reveal of Pope’s father in the show’s opener to the surprise twist ending.

In fact, Twitter has proven to be one of the show’s most effective measures in promoting the series and show-runner Shonda Rhimes has tactfully tapped into the power of social media to drive its momentum and engage viewers.

So much so, that many members of the multicultural blogging community have participated in live tweet sessions that have undoubtedly helped the show become one of TV’s highest-rated drama series.

“Shows like Scandal present a powerful opportunity to show how much influence our demographic has online,” Stacey Ferguson, the co-founder of Blogalicious, told theGrio.

Blogalicous is an online gathering of some of the nation’s top multicultural, female web writers and it celebrates diversity in the digital sphere. Each year, the organization honors these women — a majority of whom are African-American — by hosting a weekend filled with events.

This year, they kicked off their fifth anniversary on October 3 with their very own Scandal Premiere Tweet Up and Watch Party, which some of the nation’s top female bloggers and online personalities attended.

“During the past two seasons of Scandal, the Blogalicious community has hosted Twitter discussions using the hash-tag #Scandalicious, which has generated thousands of impressions,” Ferguson said. “What a better way for us to celebrate the season premiere than with our first live Tweet Up for the show?”

Allison Peters — described by Ferguson as “the genius behind the Kerry Washington’s social media mega-machine” — also appeared at the event as a featured guest.

According to Ferguson, the Blogalicious team was able to generate over 3 million impressions during the premiere and the show can expect even more social media frenzy Thursday night when the second episode of the season airs.
