'Duck Dynasty' star Phil Robertson advised men to marry 15-year-old girls in 2009

Video footage from 2009 shows Duck Dynasty patriarch Phil Robertson advising young men to marry girls when they are 15 or 16 years old.

The video is from a speech Robertson made at a Christian retreat in Georgia.

“Make sure that she can cook a meal. You need to eat some meals that she cooks, check that out. Make sure she carries her Bible. That’ll save you a lot of trouble down the road,” the 67-year-old said.

The reality TV star then continued, saying men should marry girls when they are in their mid-teens.

“They got to where they’re getting hard to find, mainly because these boys are waiting ‘til they get to be about 20 years old before they marry ’em,” Robertson said. “Look, you wait ‘til they get to be 20 years old the only picking that’s going to take place is your pocket. You got to marry these girls when they are about 15 or 16. They’ll pick your ducks.”

Robertson made headlines earlier this month with comments he made during an interview for GQ’s January issue, in which he disparaged gays and African-Americans.

In the article, he claimed that black people were happy before the civil rights movement and that he never “saw the mistreatment of any black person. Not once.”

Both the LGBT and the black communities have expressed their disappointment in Robertson’s comments, and A&E, the network Duck Dynasty airs on, suspended him indefinitely.

A&E has since reversed their suspension and announced that Robertson will appear when filming returns Jan. 15.
