theGrio's 20 most uplifting stories of 2013

There were plenty of positive and uplifting stories to share and celebrate in 2013.

Two young teens helped save a 5-year-old kidnapping victim in Pennsylvania. A kindergartner, just 5-years-old himself, helped save his father’s life thanks to some quick-thinking and knowing his ABC’s.

Sometimes, help comes from people who have little experience during crisis. But the results can be inspirational.

You’ll have to search long and hard to find a more inspiring story this year than Antoinette Tuff.

The 46-year-old bookkeeper prevented a potentially disastrous situation from escalating when she calmly talked down a 20-year-old man who entered a school with nearly 500 rounds of ammunition back in August.

Tuff was honored for her bravery. Not one of the school’s 870 students were harmed.

In addition to the heroics of many people, young and old, 2013 saw some of our elder statesman setting a positive example for future generations.
