Lupita Nyong’o to be honored by Essence at Black Women in Hollywood luncheon

12 Years a Slave star Lupita Nyong’o may have been snubbed at this week’s Golden Globes but she’s been winning in all sorts of other ways.

She was widely viewed as the best-dressed actress at the ceremony, further cementing her status as a burgeoning style icon.

And now Essence magazine plans to honor the likely best supporting actress Oscar nominee at their annual Black Women in Hollywood luncheon.

Newly elected president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Cheryl Boone Isaacs and director Ava DuVernay are expected to be celebrated as well.

Also to commemorate the 1964 Civil Rights Act’s 50th anniversary, performers with ties to the civil rights movement like Jim Brown, Cicely Tyson, Diahann Carroll and Nichelle Nichols, among others, will be singled out as well.

The luncheon will be held in Beverly Hills on February 27th.

Meanwhile, you can catch Nyong’o’s breakout performance this weekend as 12 Years a Slave re-expands into several more theaters nationwide to capitalize on its awards buzz.
