Oakland mother mourns death of two sons killed by gun violence 19 days apart

An Oakland, Calif. mother is in heavy grief after she lost both of her sons to gun violence just over two weeks apart.

Dinyal New’s youngest son, 13-year-old Lee Weathersby, was shot and killed on New Year’s Eve near Oakland while her eldest – 19-year-old Lamar Broussard – was gunned down just 19 days later.

“Hopefully the community people will come forward because how can a mother experience two losses within 19 days? Both her kids. It’s horrible,” New told NBC Bay Area. “Somebody’s failing these kids,” New said. “They feel like it’s OK to murder these kids. They have no remorse or understanding afterwards.”

According to Oakland police, no suspects have been identified in either killings.

For now, New is left mourning the death of her two children and hopes that more information on their deaths will soon surface but only has one request:

“What I do ask is for no retaliation at all,” New said. “I want to see this in the courts. I want retaliation in the court system. Please, no retaliation.”
