theGrio’s 100: Swin Cash, veteran WNBA forward can do it all

Who is Swin Cash?

Swin Cash is an 12-year WNBA veteran and current forward for the Chicago Sky. Cash is a three-time WNBA Champion, five-time All-Star and two-time Olympic Gold Medalist.

She also starred at the University of Connecticut, where she helped lead the Lady Huskies to two NCAA championships in 2000 and 2002.

Why is she on theGrio’s 100?

Cash, 34, has won and won big on every level she’s played basketball. This year, she helped guide the Sky to the franchise’s first ever playoff appearance.

Cash was also credited with mentoring the team’s star Elena Della Donne, winner of last season’s Rookie of the Year award. Della Donne heaped praise on Cash’s role with the Sky:

“Swin is by far the best leader I’ve ever been in the presence of,” said Delle Donne, who was taken under Cash’s wing as soon as she arrived here. “We couldn’t be here without Swin. Her role is huge on this team. I would argue it’s the most important role on this team.”

Her ‘Cash for Kids’ foundation provides opportunities for young people in communities across the country. Cash is also an author and an ambassador for the league. She recently spent time in Nigeria to help promote health education and build basketball programs at various schools.

What’s next for Cash?

Once Cash finishes playing basketball, she’ll likely pursue sports broadcasting opportunities. She’s already spent offseasons working for ESPN and other networks covering the NBA and other sports.

She’s said she doesn’t want to limit her television experience to sports and wouldn’t mind covering other topics such as entertainment.
