Rapper Doug E. Fresh is and will forever be known as the pioneer of beatboxing.
The 47-year-old rapper recently gained a whole new generation of followers in pop culture when Cali Swag District brought back some of his trademark dance moves with their song, “Teach Me How to Dougie.”
Even first lady Michelle Obama did her rendition of the Dougie in 2011 during a surprise visit to Alice Deal Middle School as part of her “Let’s Move” Initiative.
Last year Doug E. Fresh joined Travis Barker, Run DMC, Jordin Sparks and Ashanti in hopes of combating childhood obesity with the release of the hip-hop-inspired “Let’s Move” album.
Earlier this month the hip-hop trailblazer performed at the Partnership for a Healthier America Summit in Washington, D.C. Fresh serves as the vice president of entertainment for the Hip Hop Public Health foundation whose goal is to get children ages 8 to 12 moving and making healthy choices.
In an interview with theGrio, Doug E. Fresh talked about how hip-hop has been embraced by the White House, and delivered an impromptu beatboxing session about Michelle Obama.
