One of the most infamous characters in the legendary novel Gone With the Wind is reportedly getting a spin-off book of her own.
According to the New York Times, the slave character of Mammy, brought to life on the big screen in 1939 by Hattie McDaniel in an Academy-Award-winning performance, will be the subject of an authorized prequel to the Margaret Mitchell bestseller from over 75 years ago.
Ruth’s Journey, which is due out in October, “is the fictional telling of the life of one of the novel’s central characters, a house servant called Mammy who otherwise remains nameless. The story begins in 1804, when Ruth is brought from her birthplace, the French colony of Saint-Domingue that is now known as Haiti, to Savannah, Ga.,” reports the Times.
The estate of Margaret Mitchell signed off Ruth’s Journey and approved of its author, Donald McCaig, who has already written two sequels to Gone With the Wind.
