Chicago teacher Betty Howard was shot and killed Thursday evening, becoming an innocent victim caught in gang crossfire.
Howard was sitting in a real estate office when shots rang out, striking her in the head, according to NBC Chicago.
The Gwendolyn Brooks College Preparatory Academy teacher was pronounced dead at Northwestern Memorial Hospital.
The school’s principal, D’Andre Weaver, told NBC in a statement that Howard’s “love for all children, but particularly children with diverse learning needs, was second to none.”
“I feel the pain,” Howard’s brother Orlando Long, who is a Chicago police officer, said. “I know how other people feel now. We just go to the scene and do what we have to do as a police officer, but now it’s hitting home and it’s such a terrible situation.”
